LOVE STORIES

The stories are sprinkled with humour, pathos, and wisdom, those who speak seem to know they’ve lived a different life for quite a while at this point and maybe a normal one isn’t on the cards for them. Yet love. . . Whether it be a passion for something to do in their day, care to be shown by them or to them, or acceptance that will offer them a chance for internal peace. They remain hopeful that love is still within their grasp and hopefully it remains so for us all.

WITH TOPOLOGY

A unique cinematic experience interweaving film, photography and live original music to share the tender, intimate stories so often brushed aside amongst the darkness of homelessness: a woman saved from suicide by her pet budgie; the true love of children and parents long lost; the unexpected love of strangers in the street; a baby born on the edge of homelessness; the love of learning to read and write; the enduring love of music.

These love stories form the basis of a new collaborative work with award-winning journalist and filmmaker Trent Dalton, director of photography David Kelly, internationally renowned guitarist Karin Schaupp, ARIA-nominated quintet Topology and the patrons and staff at Fortitude Valley's iconic 139 Club drop-in centre for Brisbane's homeless and at-risk.

A contemporary tribute to love, Love Stories reveals that amid the pain, loss, isolation and desperation on the streets there is often warmth and kindness and community and love.

Featuring:
Live original music by ARIA nominated quintet Topology and internationally renowned guitarist Karin Schaupp
Interviews by award-winning journalist/filmmaker Trent Dalton
Filming and photography by David Kelly
Film editing by Susann Kovacs

Love Stories premiered at the Queensland Music Festival and the Darwin Festival in 2015.

... guitarist Karin Schaupp and Topology’s haunting, soft-grained soundtrack to Love Stories, a documentary about Brisbane’s homeless people, packed the festival’s most powerful emotional punch.

Brisbane-based ensemble Topology, with guitarist Karin Schaupp, brought their incredibly moving collaboration with film-maker Trent Dalton, Love Stories, to the festival’s main stage next. Topology’s music interwove with interviews of patrons and staff at Brisbane’s 139 Club (now called 3rd Space), a drop-in centre offering support for city’s homeless and at-risk, in a deeply felt exploration of pain and love.
